You knew it was coming eventually. Here's my big Guitar Hero vs. Rock Band post.
Now, I've made no secret that I land firmly in Harmonix's corner(is that right? with
the x's? Just looks weird). It also helped that when they finally decided to
create a band specific game, then went after one of the most influential
and talented groups ever, The Beatles. And I know I'm not the only one
completely uncaring about Guitar Hero: Van Halen. I mean, how much confidence
does Activision have in it if they're just giving away a copy with every
copy of Guitar Hero 5?
Now, I will give them the props they deserve with the new party mode for
GH5. That's a long needed feature for these music games with dynamic
drop in/out as well as changing difficulty without having to back out of a
billion menus. While that's great, it still is not enough to tempt me into
owning two different music games with completely different music libraries.
Beatles: RB is a bit of a loophole because it's only Beatles. I don't need
to think about which game has "Here Comes the Sun" and which one has
"Simple Man."
Which brings me to my next problem with GH, the band specific
games are something like 50% the actual band and 50% every other damn
thing they can think of. I can enjoy Metallica and all, but no, I'm not
dealing with that game just to get to the few songs I might like. Then looking
at GH5, we've all heard about the Kurt Cobain crap. I'm not a fan of Nirvana,
but the whole thing is weird. Why there isn't a similar uproar about
Johnny Cash who also wouldn't want to be in the game, I don't know.
But it's all just part of how GH doesn't seem to have a direction. There's
that video out of Cobain singing ridiculous things, with a skeleton playing
drums, an angel playing bass, and an Xbox avatar playing guitar. None of
those characters make any sense next to each other.
But, they're both still fun games, and it just comes down to the fact that
I do not want to switch discs while at party because one song is in GH and
the other is in RB. Plus all the DLC for RB is kind of astounding.
In other news, the strip is still going strong, you can see the newest one
right above this post. Some new features will be coming to the site, I'm mainly
brainstorming now. And I finally got suckered into doing fantasy football.
My Quarterback? McNabb...yeah, that guy with the broken ribs...I hate it already.
